FORWARD

This year marks the 64th year CYC will support "Racing at its Best" in the Pacific Northwest. But just like the rest of the world, we face significant challenges and have reason for real hope for the future.

Last year brought financial challenges to the Club and the Board and Staff are working hard to preserve the essential elements of our work. Because of a 30% increase in the lease expenses for our Lake Washington Clubhouse, we have been forced to vacate that facility without an immediate replacement identified. We will however, retain our moorage at the Leschi site and there will be no change to the on the water Lake racing experience.

We have also had to increase racing fees in order to meet our expenses for the year. To mitigate the loss of the Leschi Clubhouse for lake sailors, we will implement this fee increase for Sound racing only. This is a difficult time to ask for more money; however, for the survival of the Club it is necessary. Under the current fee structure, each day of racing costs on average $30-$35. When compared to the price of just about any other recreational activity, CYC still offers a great value and we hope that you will continue to join us for the best racing in the area.

In 2008, CYC Seattle presented 111 days of racing; 49 on the Lake and 62 on the Sound. In addition, we provided the equipment and Race Committee for three major regattas including the first Sailing World NOOD Regatta in Seattle. We look forward to partnering again this year with the Seattle Yacht Club to host the return of the NOOD Regatta this year May 15-17.

As you know, much of what CYC presents is windward/leeward racing with marks set specifically for the conditions. I'm sure you agree that this provides the best test of our skills and the most exciting racing, but it comes at a cost. Please encourage your crews to join the Race Committee on your nights off and help us maintain and upgrade our race equipment to ensure the safety and effectiveness of those who manage our races. These are great learning experiences that offer team building opportunities and a bunch of fun. I intend to contact each fleet captain and boat owner to request help in nourishing the sport we love so much.

Please note, in an effort to be consistent in our sailing instructions, we have made several changes to the Racebook, please read carefully. If you recognize things that would improve our racing programs, please contact me. I have only one request, if you have a complaint, please suggest a reasonable solution to the problem if at all possible.
