FORWARD

Corinthian Yacht Club goes into its 57th year of providing excellence in yacht racing with a comprehensive schedule of events for 2002. The popular 'package' fee structure introduced in 2000 continues, with only minor alterations. As before, the suggested fleet shown is a guideline; you should register for the package that best fits your needs, and you can also register for individual races as you see fit.

The biggest change in the Sailing Instructions is the introduction of the "new" starting system (RRS rule 26). Introduced as part of the 2001-2004 Racing Rules of Sailing, the new starting system replaces the old starting system used by CYC and other yacht clubs prior to 2001. While there was a lot of debate on the pros and cons of changing the starting system, the reason that seems most important to me was that using the new system will be closer to what our members will experience when racing with other yacht clubs, and will provide visiting sailors with a system that's closer to what they are using at home. I realize that this change may cause some confusion at first, but I encourage you to approach it with an open mind. I think that like me you won't find it to be as bad as it first seemed.

CYC only exists through the efforts of members like you. Volunteer opportunities exist in race committee support, event organization, and serving on the Club committees and councils. You might be surprised at what you can learn through volunteering. Please take the time to encourage your fellow sailors to join CYC, and I also encourage you to become an active supporter of your local racing fleet. Most of all, have a great sailing season!

Best of luck for 2002,

Bruce Van Deventer
